The results of study on Antarctic seabirds in "Science of the Total Environment”

The results of study on Antarctic seabirds [effect of the collaboration between our faculty researchers (Ph.D. student and two researchers from Department of Vertebrate Ecology and Zoology) and the researcher from the University of Western Australia], funded by National Science Centre, Poland, have just been published in the “Science of the Total Environment”.

Inter- and intraspecific differences in stable isotope niches (a proxy for foraging niches) between two sympatrically breeding storm-petrels were studied. Studied species showed considerable niche overlap. However, chicks of the larger species were fed a different diet that their parents, and the chicks and adults of the smaller species. High availability of prey in productive Antarctic ecosystems may reduce interspecific competition resulting in considerable foraging niche overlap.
