Professor Dany Azar, born in Lebanon in 1973, is currently Professor at the Lebanese University - Faculty of Sciences II. He obtained his doctorate in 2000 from the University of Paris XI (France). He obtained his Habilitation to Direct Research in 2003 from the University of Reims-Champagne-Ardennes (France). He was President of the International Paleoentomological Society for two successive terms (2013-2019); He is currently Vice-President of the World Amber Council (Gdańsk, Poland), since May 2013; and President and Founder of the Paleontological and Evolutionary Association of Lebanon. He is the discoverer of more than 550 amber deposits in Lebanon and elsewhere in the world.
He is editor-in-chief of the journal Palaeoentomology which he founded in 2018, and is a member of several editorial boards of several scientific journals such as Polskie Pismo Entomologiczne, Journal of Paleontology, The Science of Nature (Naturwissenschaften), Annales de la Société Entomologique de France, etc. He has been a visiting professor on several occasions at the National Museum of Natural History, Paris (France); at the Natural History Museum, London, (UK); Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, CAS, Nanjing (China); Earth Department of the University of Rennes (France); Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS, Warsaw (Poland). He organized the 6th Fossil X3 palaeoentomological congress in 2013 in Lebanon. He has published more than 320 research articles, including in prestigious journals like Nature, Naturwissenschaften, PLoSOne, Scientific Reports, etc.
He has received several awards:
in 2018: Green Phoenix for the scientific work accomplished by the LEBA Association and Saint Joseph University;
in 2017: Distinguished Veteran Award for Lebanon and the Arab World;
in 2014: Jesus Santiago Moure of Taxonomy Award, awarded by the Brazilian Society of Zoology for the best scientific publication on taxonomy for the years 2012-2013;
in 2013: Prize and Medal of the Presidency of the City of Gdansk (Poland) awarded by the President of the City of Gdansk for his active participation in the study of fossil insects in amber;
in 2012: Prize and Medal for Emeritus Researcher awarded by the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (CNRSL) on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee, in the Government House;
in 2006: Medal of the Franco-Lebanese bilateral scientific program (CEDRE), for the best project within ten years of the creation of the CEDRE program;
in 1998: “Basualdo Aguirre” Prize from the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris, awarded in recognition of the scientific work carried out.
